Job Summary:

The goal of this position is to investigate mitochondrial function from freshly explanted human heart tissue. One of the goals of our research program is to investigate how the human heart responds to different drugs that affect the mitochondria. The heart needs a lot of energy to sustain contractility. Mitochondria are the organelles responsible for energy generation. In heart failure, mitochondrial function is decreased. We have the ability to measure mitochondrial function in freshly explanted human hearts in response to different drugs. Our goal is to identify novel therapies for heart failure.

In addition, the position involves molecular and cellular experiments and data analysis. The ideal candidate will be someone interested in understanding biological processes in heart disease, learning new methodologies and in performing careful data analysis. Employees in this position often obtain the training needed to pursue post-graduate education.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Mitochondrial function studies from recovered explanted human hearts.
  • Animal (rodent) work, including surgeries and molecular analysis.
  • Gene expression studies - RT-PCR and Western blot.
  • Cell culture as needed.
  • Data analysis.
  • Diagnose and problem solve as it relates to the research project and respirometry equipment.
  • Collaboration with other PRAs, Sr. PRAs, students, and post docs in the lab.

Work Location:

Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, CO.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or related field.
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or related field.
  • Prior experience or background within an experimental or wet lab.

  • Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques including safety procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this part-time 0.5 FTE position has been established as $22,500 - $28,620.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
