Job Title: Laboratory Sciences Project Manager

Job Summary:

The Napier laboratory is seeking a motivated full-time Laboratory Sciences Project Manager. Our research lab focuses on the relationship between host responses to microbial triggers and development of autoreactive T cell responses that drive autoimmune diseases. We employ a number of experimental models of uveitis and arthritis in mice. We also carry out numerous in vitro studies to evaluate cellular responses. This position requires extensive experience in laboratory management, animal husbandry and models of disease, and expertise in molecular biology and cell culture. We are looking for someone enthusiastic about cellular biology and immunology who are lifetime learners interested in being a contributing member of the lab.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Managing a large mouse colony (20+ unique genetic strains) including breeding, developing new mouse lines through crosses, genotyping by PCR and flow cytometry, record keeping using MS Access and Excel, adhering to IACUC standards, and as need be implementing new record keeping methods to aid self and other employees in colony use and management.
  • Selecting and purchasing reagents, lab equipment, software licenses, and lab services. Investigating alternative sources of equipment, supplies, reagents, and services to reduce costs without loss of quality. Contacting vendors for discounts and promotions. Maintaining accurate accounting records and following up on orders.
  • Daily management of a 5 - 8 member team working on multiple projects associated with different grants and internal and external collaborators and training new employees, student workers, graduate students, postdocs, and research fellows.
  • Designing, troubleshooting, and adjusting experiments/protocols based on the outlines and goals given by the Principal Investigator.
  • Processing and analysis of mouse eye and joint tissue histological specimens. Image acquisition using light, fluorescence, and confocal microscopy.
  • Wet lab experience in the following areas will be utilized: 8+ color flow cytometry on immune cells from multiple mouse tissue types and human blood. Complex cell culture experiments with human PBMCs, T cells, and neutrophils. Isolation of DNA from mouse tissue and human blood samples. Protocol design, primer design, sample preparation, data analysis, and troubleshooting of PCR and sequencing for genotyping. Protein preparation and analysis by ELISA and Western blot.
  • Advise lab staff on experimental design, technique, troubleshooting, time management, and record keeping while taking into consideration individuals' learning styles, strengths, and weaknesses to aid each person effectively and efficiently.
  • Submitting and maintaining safety, IACUC, research and development and IRB protocols for multiple projects through the Denver VA and CU Anschutz committees.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or related field.
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year for year basis.
  • Four (4) years professional level research experience.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or related field.
  • Experience managing large mouse colonies.
  • Five (5) or more years of experience in independent protocol design, experimental execution, and data analysis.
  • Experience with protein preparation and analysis by ELISA and Western blot.
  • Experience managing staff, students, and trainees.
  • Experience with IACUC and IRB submissions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Expert knowledge of laboratory techniques including safety procedures and techniques.
  • Expert ability to analyze and solve complex problems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of basic human anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $63,529 - $80,809.
