Salary Range:

The salary range for this position will vary based on the seniority of the candidate and whether the candidate is hired at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor rank. The salary scale is as follows, and is dependent on the successful candidate's years of teaching experience at the college-level.

Assistant Professor - $102,060 to $113,443

Associate Professor - $109,642 to $125,465

Full Professor- $170,228 to $189,156

Purpose:

Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university, is seeking a qualified and enthusiastic individual to join us as a member of the faculty in Neuroscience (open rank) beginning fall 2025. As a faculty member in Neuroscience, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the vibrant academic community at our institution, engage with motivated undergraduate students, and help the program grow. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a relevant field, a strong record of research scholarship, and experience teaching undergraduates.

Santa Clara is located in the heart of California's Silicon Valley. Faculty are teaching scholars who balance a commitment to quality teaching with active programs of research and creative scholarship. Ideal candidates should therefore demonstrate not only potential for excellent undergraduate teaching, but also promise in sustained research and scholarly publication, and service to the department, college, or university, as well as an understanding and support of the University's mission and goals.

The successful candidate will teach six undergraduate courses per year on the quarter system, will be expected to successfully develop a research agenda that leads to peer-reviewed publications, and will provide service to the department, College, and University, as appropriate to rank. The candidate should be prepared to develop and teach an upper-division course, as well as a balance of introductory, methods, and/or capstone courses in neuroscience. Candidates should also have a strong program of research that has the potential to incorporate undergraduates as research assistants. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the development and leadership of the Neuroscience Program.

Required qualifications:
  • Applicants must have a Ph.D. or ABD (all but dissertation) in neuroscience or a related field.
  • Experience teaching and mentoring a diverse population of undergraduates.
  • A sustainable research program and promise of publication in the area of expertise.
  • Potential to utilize inclusive pedagogical practices that advance SCU's goals of diversity and equity.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Post-doctoral research and/or undergraduate teaching experience, research published in peer-reviewed and/or other scholarly outlets.
  • The candidate should have a five-year research plan that could be supported by external funding and provide opportunities for involvement by undergraduates.
  • Leadership experience in undergraduate academic programs.

Responsibilities:

Tenure track faculty at SCU are teaching scholars who are expected to balance teaching, research and service. This is an in-person position. More specifically, duties include but are not limited to:

TEACHING

Teach lower- and upper-division courses in the major and university core curriculum, as assigned by the director, including developing an upper division elective and teaching introductory, methods, and/or capstone courses in neuroscience. SCU is on the quarter system and a typical load is two courses per quarter (classes with a lab typically count as two courses).

Teaching responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Conducting and appearing at all assigned class meetings in a timely and prepared manner that demonstrates a command of the discipline and skill in presenting it effectively.
  • Assigning and evaluating written work, projects, and exams that align with course or core learning objectives and providing timely feedback to students.
  • Holding weekly office hours at times reasonably convenient to students.
  • Assigning and submitting student grades that are appropriate, accurate, and fair measures of student performance to the Office of the Registrar by the designated deadline.
  • Administering numerical and narrative evaluations in each section for all courses.
  • Develop and teach courses that contribute to curriculum development in Neuroscience and/or the university core.
  • Faculty teaching university core courses should follow an approved syllabus or work with the director to design an appropriate syllabus for submission for approval from the relevant Faculty Core Curriculum Committee.
  • Participate in assessment of student learning for courses in the Neuroscience Program.
  • Provide informed advice and mentoring to undergraduate students.
  • Fulfill other instructional or academic duties as may be assigned by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences or by the Director of the Neuroscience Program.

RESEARCH

Develop a rigorous research program at SCU that will result in high-quality peer-reviewed publications and/or other scholarly products, per the department and university scholarship standards.
  • The research program should be innovative, scientifically rigorous, impactful in the research community, and/or potentially have a societal impact.
  • Highly valued products include but are not limited to peer-reviewed journal articles, books published by an academic or reputable press, and PI or co-PI on external grant applications or funded grants.
  • Other forms of scholarly products include but are not limited to edited books or chapters, textbooks, invited presentations at professional or scholarly conferences, and so on.


Establish a research program that can accommodate the participation of undergraduate trainees.
  • The research program should provide learning/training opportunities accessible to students with a range of prior academic experiences.
  • Candidates should have a mentoring plan to help undergraduate trainees understand scientific theories and research ethics and train them with practical research skills.
  • Candidates are expected to engage undergraduate students with meaningful outcomes, such as publications or professional conference presentations with student co-authors no matter the authorship order.

Promote collaborative work within the Neuroscience Program or across different departments.

Advance the diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives of the university whether in research topics, research that expands the generalizability of findings in the field, populations that the work serves, or the diversity of the participants, methods used, or research team.

Endorses open science practices that promote transparency, replicability, and ethical scholarship.

SERVICE

Provide effective service to the Neuroscience Program, the College, the University and the profession through contributions other than teaching and scholarship such as service on committees, participation in professional organizations and activities, leadership, and community service performed by virtue of professional expertise or association with the university as appropriate to rank and experience.
