Position description

The Department of Statistics and Applied Probability at the University of California, Santa Barbara invites applications for an Assistant Professor position.

We are looking for individuals with a strong research agenda in Statistics with an emphasis on Data Science and demonstrated research and potential for teaching excellence.

Responsibilities of faculty members generally include the development of an actively funded research program of the highest quality, teaching at undergraduate and/or graduate levels, recruitment, supervision, and mentorship of graduate students, and participation in university service and professional activities. The University is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching and service as appropriate to the position.

About the Department:
Established in 1989, the Department of Statistics and Applied Probability (PSTAT) is a diverse community engaged in education and research. Our 35 faculty members (permanent and visiting) are actively involved in interdisciplinary research spanning Financial Mathematics, Data Science, Actuarial Science, Theoretical Statistics, Applied Probability, Applied Statistics, and Biostatistics. We actively recruit the highest-quality faculty and graduate students. The Department offers Bachelor's programs in Statistics & Data Science, Actuarial Science, and Financial Mathematics & Statistics and counts more than 2000 undergraduate Majors. We are also home to more than 100 graduate students in programs including BS/MS in Actuarial Science, MA in Applied Statistics, and PhD in Statistics and Applied Probability. Benjamin Banneker Initiative:
In 2024-25, UC Santa Barbara departments are partnering with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and
Inclusion to launch a special faculty recruitment initiative named after Benjamin Banneker, the 18th-
century African American mathematician, astronomer, antiracist, engineer, ecologist, and peace
advocate. Funded by an Advancing Faculty Diversity grant from the UC Office of the President, the
Banneker Initiative will recruit scholars, scientists, and engineers whose disciplinary and interdisciplinary
work would take place within the community of concerns exemplified by Banneker's intellectual, ethical,
and social commitments as an African American scientist, especially his desire to advance scientific and
humanistic knowledge for the public good. With the goal of creating a diverse community around such
concerns, applicants may be eligible to be fellows in the Benjamin Banneker Initiative. The community of
Banneker Fellows will receive funding for cohort building and professional development activities,
including enrollment in the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity Faculty Success

Qualifications


Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Applicants must have a PhD (or equivalent) in Statistics, Biostatistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science or related areas at the time of application.

Preferred qualifications

A demonstrated record of excellence in research, and a record of (or potential for) excellent teaching are desired. Successful candidates will have a record of (or potential for) collaborative research that leverages synergies within the Department and Division or links to the campus Data Science initiative is desired.
